The current 2-tier system of county and district councils has been in place since 1974. Following public and stakeholder engagement, councils in Derbyshire submitted various proposals for the future of local government in Derby and Derbyshire including a unified single unitary council and a split between the north and south. The government has now made its decision: on 1 April 2028, the existing 10 councils in Derby and Derbyshire will be replaced by two unitary councils – one for the north and one for the south. The split is shown on the Derbyshire Council website.
We don’t know yet what this will mean for schools in terms of support from the LA – will services like SEND and the Data Hub be split up? We just don’t know. The DSGA will press the LA for updates on this and we will post them here when we find out.
