UK Poverty 2024

The Joseph Rowntree Foundation has published a report on the state of poverty in the UK, concluding that poverty has increased, close to pre-pandemic levels. Children have consistently had the highest poverty rates, while pensioners along with working-age adults without children now have the lowest. They note:

We have now experienced nearly 3 tough years of accelerating inflation and 4 desperate years since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. There was little progress on headline poverty and increasing levels of deep poverty and destitution even before then… we need a vision for reducing the level, depth and extremes of poverty across the UK. This requires a suite of policies that make up a coherent overall plan to end poverty in the UK that is proportionate to the size of the challenge we face.
