The DfE has released support materials to help schools and colleges use AI (artificial intelligence) safely and effectively on 10 June. There are four modules for staff and one for leaders:

  • Understanding AI in education;
  • Interacting with generative AI in education;
  • Safe use of generative AI in education;
  • Use cases of generative AI in education;
  • Using AI in education: support for school and college leaders.

You can download them from the DfE webiste, here.

John Pearce, one of Derbyshire’s Lead Governors (DLG), has provided this policy template  ensure Governor school visits are a shared endeavour with staff. You are welcome to adapt it to your own needs. He has also provided this handout used at the 7th November 2023 DCC briefing on Governors and School improvement. John is also happy to advise school governors in his role as DLG, and if you wish to contact him, please use our Contact Form and we will put you in touch.

Children not in School

Derbyshire Country Council has produced this document, which has guidance on the subject of children not in school.

Federations

All categories of maintained school, including voluntary-aided, foundation schools and maintained school nurseries can federate together under one governing body. The establishment and membership of a federation means that the governors and school leaders commit to improving the outcomes and life chances for all children across the federation, as opposed to just a single school. You can find guidance on setting up and running Federations here:

Safeguarding

Your governing board and school have a responsibility to safeguard and promote the welfare of children, according to the statutory guidance Keeping Children Safe in Education (KCSIE).

Derby City Council, Derbyshire County Council, Derby and Derbyshire Integrated Care Board and Derbyshire Constabulary (the Statutory partners) work in partnership with relevant agencies such as health providers, schools and education settings, probation providers and others to improve local safeguarding arrangements and hold each other to account as to how they are keeping children safe. Their website is https://www.ddscp.org.uk/about-ddscp. We provide the regular DDSCP briefing updates on our website, here.

GovernorHub has a useful one page summary of your board’s role in keeping children safe in your school, and the duties of your safeguarding governor (you will need an account to log-in)

These DfE standards can be used as guidelines to support your school or college use the right digital infrastructure and technology. More digital and technology categories will be added to the service over time.

Meeting them can help you make more informed decisions about technology leading to safer, more cost-efficient practices and new learning opportunities for students.
