NGA publishes policy paper on SEND

Findings from NGA’s annual governance survey reveal an education system under growing strain. Supporting pupils with SEND has seen the steepest rise as the top challenge for governing boards across England (cited by 63% of respondents) and is accompanied by sharp increases in SEND-related pressures such as difficulties accessing funding and securing education, health and care plans (EHCPs). So NGA’s new report “How do you solve a problem like the SEND system?” calls on the Department for Education (DfE) to ensure all pupils with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) receive timely and high quality support. Outlined in our recently published policy paper, we are urging action in four key areas including:

  • sustainable funding that supports early intervention
  • workforce development to build confidence in the classroom
  • stronger collaboration with parents and a more efficient and equitable EHCP process

You can read the report in NGA’s website, here.
