National behaviour survey report: 2023 to 2024 academic year

The DfE have recently published the latest report on school behaviour (for the academic year 2023-24). It covers school behaviour culture and policies, pupil experience, frequency and impact of misbehaviour and response.

You can download the full report from the DfE website here, and some of the findings include:

  • 98% of school leaders said they felt confident managing misbehaviour in their school, compared with 91% for teachers;
  • 72% of school leaders reported that pupil behaviour was either ‘very good’ or ‘good’ in the past week (versus 46% of teachers). For pupils, 40% said that behaviour had been ‘very good’ or ‘good’ in the past week. Compared to previous years, this is a decrease for school leaders and teachers from May 2023 (from 82% and 55% respectively);
  • 30% of pupils said that their school asks pupils for feedback about behaviour in their school and 44% said they were confident that any feedback they may give regarding behaviour in school would be listened to or acted upon (an increase of 4% over 2023);
  • The proportion of school teachers reporting that their school was calm and orderly ‘every day’ or ‘most days’ in the past week in May 2024 was 53%, a decrease from 60% in March 2024.
