The working lives of teachers and leaders is an annual DfE survey of teachers and leaders in state schools in England. The survey explores teachers and leaders’:
- workload, wellbeing and flexible working arrangements
- attitudes to pay
- experiences of professional development
- future career intentions
This summary presents headline findings from wave 2 of the survey, carried out between 2 February and 11 May 2023. This was during a period of industrial action and wider cost of living pressures. The 2023 pay award for teachers was agreed in July.
Amongst other findings, teachers’ workloads have increased since last year by about 1% on average – the main culprit being non-teaching tasks such as data recording, input and analysis, and behaviour incident follow-up.
