This article from Schools Week analyses the outcomes (so far) from the recent DfE ‘Opportunity for All’ White Paper. You can read it here, but below are the bare bones of how things are going:
- The two ‘ambitions’ – neither of these is on track
- An excellent teacher for every child: 2 delivered, 1 on track, 1 delayed
- Delivering high standards of curriculum, behaviour and attendance: 4 delivered, 3 on track, 2 delayed, 3 scrapped
- Target support for every child who needs it: 1 delivered, 1 on track, 1 scrapped, 2 “unlcear”
- A stronger and fairer system: 4 delivered, 3 on track, 2 delayed, 8 scrapped, 4 “unclear”
Many of the scrapped items relate to academies, including:
- All schools to be in a MAT or have plans to join one by 2030
- Statutory duties for trusts to work with other bodies, and requirement to follow the admissions code
- Legislation to protect faith schools’ freedoms and protections when converting
- Powers for councils to force trusts to admit children and object to published admission numbers
- Councils will be able to launch spin-off MATs
- Powers to mass convert all maintained schools in an area at a council’s request
